De-sTREss your body for better living
What is TRE®?
TRE® stands for Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises.
Developed by Dr David Berceli, TRE® is a self-help technique that deliberately activates our bodies’ instinctive shaking mechanism (tremoring) in a safe and controlled way. Session by session, these tremors help to release the build-up of muscular tension accumulated in our body during stressful and traumatic life experiences.
Stress and Trauma is described as the experience of being overwhelmed and helpless when we sense that our survival is under threat. The stress response is activated to a much larger degree. As with other mammals, once we sense that the danger is over our bodies will instinctively begin to tremor and shake to discharge the excess energy. This tremor mechanism enables the body to return once again to a calm and relaxed state. Even though this is part of our body’s natural self-healing capacity and is available to everyone, many people due to social pressure have been conditioned to suppress this response. We don’t want others to perceive us as weak and not coping so we block this mechanism.
The whole purpose of TRE® is to activate the body shaking mechanism (tremoring) that occurs naturally in the body. Its function is to reset the nervous system through the body tremoring. It’s actually the nervous system function pulling itself back into health.
The tremors originate in the centre of gravity of the body, which is protected by the Psoas muscle. The Psoas major muscle (pronounced “so-as”) is the “muscle of the soul.” This core-stabilizing muscle located near the hip bone affects mobility, structural balance, joint function, flexibility, and much more. In addition to its function to help keep the body upright and moving. The Psoas is also connected to the diaphragm. Breathing is modulated at the diaphragm, and it is another location where many physical symptoms associated with fear and anxiety manifest.
The way we live today, constantly rushing, competing and achieving, keeps the Psoas in a constant “fight or flight” state.
A variety of problems have been associated with a chronically-stressed Psoas muscle. Apart from the obvious physical distress it does negatively affect your emotional state. Awareness that a healthy Psoas is important to emotional wellness, as well as physical health, is the first step towards ensuring that we give this muscle the attention it deserves.
The Uniqueness of TRE®
The Body Never Lies
Practicing TRE® consistently helps us to release that which is unresolved from our past and we soon begin to reconnect to the natural flow of the body. We find we are able to breathe easier, sleep more deeply, move with greater ease, feel more connected to ourselves and to others and generally feel calmer and more peaceful in our lives.
TRE® is a safe and effective stress release technique for most people. The process is learnt by consulting with a Certified TRE® Provider in the beginning. You will be taught how to activate the tremors and how to self-regulate the TRE® process according to your physical and psychological comfort levels. TRE®, like any other new method requires practice and may take some time to get the hang of it.
You will be guided through the TRE® process until you feel confident to begin practicing TRE® on your own. Within the initial first six sessions, a new mind-body awareness and understanding of the TRE® process is achieved. Once you have learnt how to activate and regulate the process, TRE® can be practiced at home as a lifelong tool to release unresolved tension patterns and manage your own stress levels.
